 Introduction:

Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is observed every year on 26 November to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1949. This day holds immense national significance as it marks the birth of modern India as a constitutional democracy. The celebration reminds every citizen about the vision, values, and principles on which the nation was built.

History of Constitution Day

The idea of a Constitution for India started taking shape even before independence. On 9 December 1946, the Constituent Assembly of India met for the first time to begin drafting a constitution for a free nation. After continuous discussions, debates, and revisions, the Assembly appointed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee on 29 August 1947.

Under Ambedkar’s leadership, the Committee worked tirelessly for nearly 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days, studying constitutions of various countries, analyzing India's needs, and ensuring that the new Constitution reflected justice, equality, and freedom.

Finally, on 26 November 1949, the draft was accepted and formally adopted by the Constituent Assembly. Although the Constitution came into full force on 26 January 1950, India celebrates 26 November as the day of adoption. In 2015, the Government of India officially declared 26 November as Constitution Day.
